The following projects, in alphabetical order by requesting organization, will support New Jersey's law enforcement, assist at-risk New Jersey youth and help to reduce crime.

 

180 Child and Teen Violence Reduction and Treatment Expansion

180 Turning Lives Around, Inc
Hazlet, NJ

For personnel, programming, and services related to child violence prevention and treatment for sexual assault. The funding will be used for operating and personnel costs for the expansion and development of programs for children touched by violence, both to prevent it and treat those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. Programs include a helpline, comprehensive therapy for children affected by domestic violence, and support to young adults that have been sexually assaulted.

A Child Is Missing-New Jersey

A Child Is Missing

The requested funds will be used to assist New Jersey law enforcement agencies in finding missing children and adults in the critical hours immediately following an incident. The funding will help update and maintain New Jersey call lists, support A Child Is Missing's NJ law enforcement training sessions and establish community awareness meetings involving child safety issues throughout the state. The program will help save lives and reduce the time and costs associated with finding missing individuals.

Above the Rim Mentor Program

The requested funds will be used to enhance and expand a mentoring program for at-risk youth in Newark and the greater Essex County area. The funding will be used to supplement staff salaries and purchase equipment to provide year-round mentoring including one to one companionship and group mentoring for disadvantaged youth. This will help to educate more children, expose them to positive influences and reduce the likelihood that they will become involved in criminal activity.

Jubilee Center Program

The requested funding will be used for project staff and expenses for a year-round afterschool and summer program for low-income, disadvantaged young people living in public housing. The project will provide young people with academic support, a computer lab, arts activities, healthy meals, and physical education so they can succeed in school and overcome the barriers they face to grow into self-sufficient and productive citizens.

High School Drug and Violence Prevention Project

The requested funds will be used to expand services to high school students and their communities and educate about the consequences of substance abuse and violence. This new initiative will emphasize improved self-esteem and strong interpersonal relationships as a means of developing refusal skills critical to avoiding drugs and violence.

Atlantic County Law Enforcement Street Crimes Task Force

The requested funds will be used to purchase communications equipment needed to maintain and improve support for the Street Crimes Task Force. The new equipment will provide faster response times, improved communication, increased apprehension of criminal persons and improved overall patrolling practices.

Center for Suburban Criminal Justice

The Center for Suburban Criminal Justice at Bergen Community College is a consortium of criminal justice, educational, and community based organizations that collaborate to coordinate data driven policy and procedural advancement in social and criminal justice programs that relate specifically to suburban areas. These communities can have significant diversity in population and income; however, there is little research or data on the criminal justice issues or best practices for law enforcement. This funding will be used for research and development of effective education and training programs that will enhance public safety.

UHF Public Safety Radio

The requested funds will be used to convert the emergency services two-way radio system from its current very-high frequency (VHF) configuration to a more modern ultra-high frequency (UHF) system. This includes the purchase of new mobile radios for police vehicles, portable radios for individual officers, and an upgrade for the desk console at Police Headquarters. This will allow for enhanced interoperability and reliability.

Comprehensive Mentoring Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson & Union Counties

The requested funds will be used to support and expand a data-driven, results oriented one-to-one mentoring program for at-risk children in Essex, Hudson and Union Counties. The funding will enable BBBS to double the number of youth served in the community for an additional 1,384 mentor matches. This program helps to keep children out of the juvenile justice system and enrolled children are more likely to graduate college.

Public Safety Communications Enhancements

The requested funds will be used to replace and upgrade portable and mobile radios to digital VHF and UHF models, UHF receivers, UHF and standard base stations, VHF pagers, and rack chargers. Development of a secure and uninterrupted radio communications system is paramount to the functionality of every public safety department and critical to the protection and well-being of the public, police, fire and other critical municipal personnel.

The requested funds will be used to purchase updated law enforcement equipment for the Haledon Police Department to improve crime prevention and community safety.

The requested funds will be used for the purchase and installation of two mobile Emergency LED Message Boards that will function as the primary mode of communicating emergent messages. These boards are an invaluable tool for the police and municipal officials of Hopatcong to use for critical communications to residents and visitors.

The requested funds will be used to purchase a digital mobile video recording system to replace outdated and poorly functioning VHS mobile video recording system used in police vehicles. This new equipment would be used for the protection of police personnel.

Police and Emergency Services Equipment Upgrade Project

Northvale, NJ

The requested funds will be used to install a state-of-the-art communication command center with compatible mobile/portable radios for patrol vehicles and an emergency generator to support the command center. First responders will be able to communicate seamlessly throughout the municipality and with neighboring jurisdictions leading to faster response times and better crime prevention.

Police and Emergency Services Interoperability Equipment Upgrade

The requested funds will be used to purchase an upgraded state-of-the-art, digital public safety radio system for its police department and emergency services. This digital radio system will serve the critical communications needs of the police and emergency services for many years to come and will have the capability to be fully interoperable with the new State of New Jersey communication system currently being developed.

Purchase Mobile Data Terminals

Totowa, NJ

The requested funds will be used to purchase and install thirteen Mobile Data Terminals (MDT) in the Borough's police vehicles. An MDT allows an officer to rapidly access multiple nationwide crime databases and create real time records that are immediately accessible to officers. This will enhance criminal apprehension and public safety.

Gang Prevention Through Targeted Outreach

Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey
Morristown, NJ

The requested funds will be used to expand a targeted outreach program to more at-risk teens and provide them with an alternative to gang involvement through evidence based prevention models. Case management is an integral part of the program to ensure the individuals receive appropriate services. This includes a monthly meeting to document progress on a participant's goals, school performance, involvement with the juvenile justice system, family involvement, referral status and significant problems or achievement. This can help reduce youth involvement in the criminal justice system saving money and allowing young people to achieve their full potential and become productive citizens.

Delinquency Prevention Initiative - McGinnis Club

The requested funds will be used for operating costs to expand the existing Delinquency Prevention Initiative into a new school-based Club site. The goal is to reduce truancy levels of the youth who have been arrested and processed through one or more law enforcement mechanism while increasing school achievement. DPI seeks to play a significant role in reducing juvenile delinquency and gang involvement of high-risk youth.

Taking It to the Streets Anti-Gang Initiative

The requested funds will be used to implement an anti-gang and mentorship program for youth between the ages of 10 and 16 in Brick Township. The program will target youth in low to moderate income housing developments where juvenile crime and gang involvement have increased during the past two years. These programs will take place on-site at each of these developments to eliminate transportation concerns that are a large reason why many young people don't currently participate in the programs. This funding will help to address a growing problem before it has an even greater impact upon the youth and the community.

Expansion of Domestic Violence Counseling Services

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton
Trenton, NJ

The requested funds will be used to hire additional counselors to provide domestic violence support services at satellite locations in Burlington County and to hire a bilingual caseworker for Latino victims of domestic violence in Lakewood. These additions would help to overcome some of the barriers that prevent victims from seeking assistance.

Public Safety Improvements

The requested funds would be used to purchase in-car video cameras for patrol cars and laptop computers that would enhance the usefulness of the Township's new computerized records system. These equipment improvements will allow Cherry Hill's public safety officials to continue operating effectively.

New Life New Beginnings Pathways to Victory

Churches In Cooperation, Inc.

The requested funds will be used for the operating cost for providing mentoring and support services for the formerly incarcerated in Essex and Union Counties. Churches In Cooperation uses an evidence based model that demonstrates participants who met with a mentor were twice as likely to obtain a job and were more likely to stay employed than participants who did not meet with a mentor.

Bayonne Law Enforcement Project

City of Bayonne
Bayonne, NJ

The requested funds will be used to purchase technological equipment to combat the growth in motor vehicle crashes and traffic related injuries and fatalities. This includes a combination of traffic calming devices, better speed enforcement technology and other equipment to help the police department better monitor, respond, assess and investigate traffic safety issues. With an 18% decrease in police personnel, the City must utilize other means to combat this growth in motor vehicle crashes. The proposed project will combat this growing problem and result in fewer motor vehicle crashes, related injuries and fatalities.

Gunshot Location System Acquisition

City of Elizabeth Police Department
Elizabeth, NJ

The requested funds will be used to purchase equipment that will allow the Elizabeth Police Department to quickly identify the location of gunfire within the City. Based on crime analysis, the Elizabeth Police Department will be targeting a 4 square mile coverage area where there has been a significant amount of crime and shots fired. Network sensors will be able to detect and calculate the position where the gun was fired and send the data to a central server accessible by law-enforcement agencies. This will help to increase police response time, enhance criminal apprehension and provide a safer community.

Law Enforcement Technology

The requested funds will be used to purchase equip for the Hackensack Police Department's patrol fleet including emergency warning lights, mobile computer terminals that are interoperable with other jurisdictions and automated license plate readers. This will provide increased police officer safety and efficiency due to immediate criminal justice information access and enhanced inter- and intra-agency data availability, resulting in improved crime prevention and detection.

The requested funds will be used to equip the new west police district with a combined package of telecommunication systems and computer equipment. The technology will allow the police department to perform their duties more effectively. Additionally, the technology can be used to communicate with other city, county, state and federal agencies to provide a coordinated response in the event of an emergency.

The requested funds will be used to purchase automatic license plate recognition scanner for the Police Department. This equipment facilitates security, enforcement, checkpoint, and covert operations by the Police Department.

Police Mobile Enforcement Technology

City of New Brunswick
New Brunswick, NJ

The requested funds will be used to purchase mobile enforcement technology for the New Brunswick Police Department. This includes mobile data computers, mobile video cameras and automated license plate recognition systems. As host to the State University, Johnson and Johnson International Headquarters, multiple university hospital systems, Middlesex County Administration and Court Complex, and the New Jersey Transit Train Center, New Brunswick is a vital urban hub that puts an enormous demand on the City's Police to adequately cover these many activity generators. The requested technology will help expand the effectiveness of the police and help to reduce crime by accurately identifying and recording criminal activity.

Police Surveillance Camera Project

The requested funds will be used to purchase and install fifty surveillance cameras in high crime areas of Newark. These cameras will also be used as part of a research project to evaluate the effectiveness of camera surveillance in reducing urban crime. This will help to reduce crime and ensure the most effective law enforcement techniques.

The requested funds will be used for the purchase and installation of a Closed Circuit Television Camera Surveillance System to be deployed city-wide to prevent and manage crime. The technology will be deployed as an additional tool for the Police Departments to use in achieving its goals of reducing crime, and the fear of crime, while improving the quality of life for residents and business owners within the City.

Paterson Police Gunshot Location System Acquisition

City of Paterson
Paterson, NJ

To expand the installation of network sensors at specific coordinates on buildings and telephone poles to locate the origin of gunshots and weapons-events. Paterson has utilized the system since October 2008 and has seen a large decrease in gun related incidents. This will help to reduce crime, enhance criminal apprehension and provide a safer community.

Law Enforcement Technology

City of Perth Amboy
Perth Amboy, NJ

The requested funds will be used to upgrade the Police Department's crime fighting technology by purchasing and installing security cameras in criminal hot spots. The City is working hard to employ a coordinated and collaborative approach among all levels of law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend the most persistently dangerous and disruptive individuals. This new technology will help with that effort to protect the public.

YouthStat Violence and Gang Prevention

City of Trenton
Trenton, NJ

The requested funds will be used to expand program options for YouthStat managed juveniles. Specifically, the funding will provide participants and their families with customized, community-based programming including mentoring, work experience and life skills development for 120 juveniles that are at the highest risk for gang and criminal involvement. The goal of this program is to match at-risk youth with the right intervention, turn them around and monitor their progress on a regular basis.

County-Wide Public Safety Radio Communications System

County of Bergen
Hackensack, NJ

The requested funds will be used to establish a fully-redundant countywide trunked radio system that will provide wireless communication for all public safety/service agencies with seamless interoperability. The funding will be used to procure a Public Safety/Service 12.5 kHz UHF Digital Trunked Simulcast Radio System Infrastructure, subscriber equipment, associated hardware, software and ancillary equipment. The purpose of this system is to enhance the safety and security of the county residents.

County-wide Public Safety Radio Communications

The requested funds will be used to purchase equipment for a county-wide public safety radio communications project to enhance emergency management communications throughout Mercer County. This will serve to connect police, fire, emergency management, corrections and other public safety agencies at the county and municipal level, improving communication and enhancing the safety of the 350,000-plus residents of Mercer County.

The requested funds will be used to create and implement a statewide program designed to educate parents and teachers with information and strategies to resist drugs and violence. Specifically, the funding will be used to increase parental involvement in the drug resistance program and create a technologically advanced 24 hour hotline accessible to students, parents, and teachers with immediate responses to their questions. Through the development of this resource, parents and teachers will be able to increase their knowledge and understanding of the drug temptations faced by students and the steps they can take to help children avoid this pitfall.

Essex Mortgage/Arson Housing Fraud Prosecution

The requested funds will be used to identify, investigate and prosecute cases of arson in properties left vacant due to the economic downturn. By building on the efforts of local police, fire and code enforcement personnel, this will ultimately bring to justice those responsible. A growing number of investigations conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Arson Task Force have revealed a high correlation between vacant building fires and indications of mortgage and/or insurance fraud. The addition of personnel to focus exclusively on this problem including a forensic accountant will provide the necessary resources to conduct these labor intensive investigations and prosecutions.

Domestic Violence Liaison, Family Justice Center

The requested funds will be used to continue employing a domestic violence liaison to coordinate prosecution activities with social services at the Essex Family Justice Center. This will help to continue progress in coordinating criminal prosecutorial activities and social service outreach to domestic violence victims. Victims will receive information and services regarding legal, medical, transportation, housing and child care.

Computer Crimes Unit

The requested funds will be used to establish a Computer Crimes Unit for forensic investigation of computer and high-tech communication equipment. Specifically, the funding will purchase computer equipment to facilitate high-tech investigations of electronic equipment and communications potentially involved in criminal activity, and hire a detective with appropriate training for such investigations. This will greatly enhance the Essex County Prosecutor's Office's capacity to successfully prosecute the increasing number of crimes involving modern data and communications equipment and services, including the area of child exploitation.

Progress Around The Schools Program

The requested funds will be used to provide an array of services in several counties in New Jersey to assist families and communities with youth violence prevention and overcoming barriers to academic success. The project will include academic tutoring, mentoring services, victim impact training, counseling, and character enrichment workshops. Additional services include employment readiness and placement, educational field trips, teen summits, and community service activities. The goal is to reduce violence in the community and help children avoid getting involved in juvenile delinquency.

The requested funds will be used to provide structured, supervised after school activities that assist individual youth with developing self-esteem, leadership skills and motivation for learning. The goals are to improve academic achievement, decrease delinquency and increase healthy outcomes for at-risk urban youth.

Model Jail Diversion and Re-entry Education Program

Mental Health Association of Essex County, Inc
Montclair, NJ

The requested funds will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Mental Health Association of Essex County's jail diversion program for non-violent mentally ill offenders. This will include educational outreach programs to educate other jurisdictions about the new jail diversion and re-entry program designed to appropriately and effectively manage non-violent mentally ill offenders. Sixteen percent of prisoners, fourty-two percent of jail inmates and fifty percent of juvenile detainees have a mental illness. Research shows that it is less expensive and more effective to provide appropriate services in the community than to incarcerate individuals with mental illness who commit a non-violent crime.

Strengthening American Families and Reducing Incarceration

Mid-Atlantic States Career and Education Center
Pennsville, NJ

The requested funds will be used to implement job training programs for inmates in Gloucester and Salem County Correction Facilities and for at-risk individuals in both counties. This will include green job training, basic job skills training and job placement upon release. Additionally, the funding will provide a Community Outreach worker in each correctional facility to coordinate the inmates' re-entry program with other transitional services such as mental health, substance abuse and housing. Both Gloucester and Salem counties have a recidivism rate of nearly 60%. Reducing recidivism will help to reduce the crime rates and help ex-offenders become productive members of society.

SPEAK UP Hotline Outreach and Public Education

New Jersey Association of School Resource Officers
Fort Lee, NJ

The requested funds will be used to implement a statewide SPEAK UP anti-violence hotline awareness campaign. SPEAK UP is a national hotline (1-866-SPEAK-UP) and text-messaging platform for students to anonymously report weapon-related threats in their schools and communities. Funding to raise awareness about this hotline in New Jersey will help to prevent tragic violent incidents from occurring throughout the State. The project also provides teaching materials, teacher training, public service announcements, and other outreach activities to help provide a safe community for students and residents. In the cities where focused outreach efforts have been implemented there has been at least a tripling and in some cases a ten-fold increase in hotline calls with untold lives saved.

User-Authenticating Personalized Weapon

New Jersey Institute of Technology
Newark, NJ

The requested funds will be used to turn the smart gun prototype into a version that can be commercialized with compact circuit boards and semi-automatic operation. The sensor suite will be improved with a higher density sensor array and greater sensitivity. Additional, complementary biometrics will be added to achieve the highest levels of error-free authentication. NJIT will produce one dozen new prototype handguns and use these for rigorous field tests and demonstrations with the objective of transferring the technology to a commercial manufacturer. Accidental shootings, teen suicides, and illegal trade of weapons can be reduced through technologies that render a gun inoperable in the hands of the wrong user.

Command Officers Development Course

The requested funds will be used to develop and underwrite an advanced police management and administration development program for New Jersey police administrators. The funding will be used to complete the development of the program and most importantly to permit cash-strapped municipal and county agencies to have police managers participate in the program at low or no cost, which in turn will greatly improve the administration of their agencies.

Female Offender Reentry Group Effort of Hudson, Essex and Mercer

New Jersey State Parole Board
Trenton, NJ

The requested funds will be used to replicate the Female Offender Reentry Group Effort (FORGE) reentry model in Hudson and sustain the initiative in Essex and Mercer counties. FORGE offers case management and reentry services that aid ex-offenders in securing housing, medical assistance and other support crucial for successful reentry into the community. The number of females involved in the criminal justice system has risen while the resources for female offenders are insufficient and infrequent. The FORGE approach was evaluated and found to reduce recidivism by 83% for female parolees. This comprehensive, strategic approach improves reentry outcomes for female offenders, incorporating a continuum of care transition plan, the opportunity for educational and economic advancement while focusing on accountability and public safety.

The requested funds will be used to purchase and equip police cars with video cameras to capture activity and provide additional security for officers. Capturing incidents on video would increase accountability and citizen confidence during police encounters.

Ohel Violence Prevention Program

The requested funds will be used to assist children and adults who are victims of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, or violence. Funding will be used for outpatient counseling and support groups, as well as crisis intervention for victims, including evaluations and treatment programs. The project also supports programs for community education on prevention and response to violence, as well as specialized training for teachers, counselors, principals, and community leaders. Further, workshops for parents are included to emphasize the importance of communication with children.

Passaic Valley Water Commission Security Improvements

Passaic County Sheriff's Department

The requested funds will be used for the installation of new high security fencing and CCTVs at the Passaic Valley Water Commission's main electrical substation. This is part of the implementation of risk reduction measures that were identified in the recently completed Vulnerability Assessment (VA).

Youth Against Gang Program

Pemberton Township
Pemberton, NJ

The requested funds will be used to provide at-risk young people and former gang members with viable alternatives to gang-related activities including community service opportunities, life skills, educational programs and mentoring services. Recent years have shown a surge in gang problems in towns and rural areas. The proposed program is a comprehensive campaign to stop the spread of gang violence by providing vulnerable youth with the skills and opportunities necessary for success as productive citizens.

The requested funds will be used to upgrade the 9-1-1 emergency telephone system and interface. This will enhance the 9-1-1 service and will allow the agency to be capable of handling regionalized 9-1-1 service in five townships in southern Middlesex County.

Police Equipment Upgrades

Town of Hammonton
Hammonton, NJ

The requested funds will complete the police equipment upgrades program and equip all vehicles in the fleet with upgraded safety tools. The upgrades include surveillance equipment and improved telecommunications technology that will help the law enforcement track and respond to criminal activity.

Morristown Police and Emergency Services Interoperability Equipment Upgrade

Morristown, NJ

The requested funding will be used by the Town of Morristown to purchase an upgraded public safety radio system which will help the police department provide emergency service dispatch for first responders. The system will allow for interoperability among the numerous public safety agencies which operate within the township's jurisdiction and improve safety in the community.

Secaucus Law Enforcement Project

Secaucus, NJ

The requested funding will be used by Secaucus to purchase additional technology equipment including equipment for mobile data computers, video license plate recognition systems and radio identifiers to be installed on law enforcement vehicles. These equipment enhancements will improve communication and allow the township to increase public safety and crime fighting capabilities.

Bridgewater Police Technology

Township of Bridgewater
Bridgewater, NJ

The requested funds will be used to buy enhanced video equipment that would improve the police department's ability to identify crime suspects. In addition, a portable, weatherproof video recording system would be purchased enabling officers to conduct surveillance from remote locations. This would improve the township's crime fighting capability and increase the effectiveness of the police department.

Youth Violence Prevention Initiative

Township of Irvington
Irvington, NJ

The requested funding will be used to continue and expand Irvington's Youth Violence Prevention Initiative. The program provides mentoring services to at-risk youth in Irvington to help reduce gang involvement, violence and drug abuse. The program is in jeopardy because of funding limitations and these resources would allow the Youth Violence Prevention Initiative to expand its services.

Radio Equipment Replacement - Radio Frequency Re-Banding

The requested funding will be used to install an upgraded public safety communications radio system. The current system will become outmoded shortly and a new system would coordinate radio communications with local, county and state agencies. This enhancement will improve communication and coordination for first responders and ultimately improve public safety in the Township.

Maplewood Law Enforcement Project

The requested funding will be used by Maplewood to purchase and install a broadband wireless network to improve communication for Township law enforcement. With this new technology, radio reception will be more reliable and police vehicle computers will have the ability to send and receive video to headquarters and to other vehicles.

Regional Communications Center Project

Neptune, NJ

The requested funding will be used to purchase radio equipment for the Neptune Township Police Communications Center. The center has been renovated to accomodate the regionalization of six local emergency communications centers into one regional center and the upgraded radio equipment will enhance the Center's communication capabilities and help improve public safety.

Nutley Police and Emergency Services Interoperability Equipment Upgrade

Township of Nutley
Nutley, NJ

The requested funding will be used by the Township of Nutley to purchase an upgraded digital public safety radio system for its police department and emergency services. This digital radio system will improve the communications needs of the police and emergency services in the township.

South Orange, NJ

The requested funding will be used to purchase a new communications console, radios and new record management software. This will enable quicker emergency response within South Orange and also within Essex County for mutual aid calls. In addition, this will enhance inter-and intra-agency communications.

Weehawken Law Enforcement Project

Weehawken, NJ

The requested funding will be used to purchase mobile data computers for the Township's police car fleet. The mobile data computers will allow the officers to further enhance the efficiency of their operations while increasing the overall quality of law enforcement services by improving communications and access to state and federal databases while on patrol.

Union City Law Enforcement Project

Union City, New Jersey

The requested funding will be used to install video surveillance cameras along city streets to provide security monitoring of public areas, streets, side streets, storefronts and building entrances. During the past few years, violent and non-violent crime has been escalating in the city and this project will help decrease crime and allow for more effective detective work.

The requested funding will be used to enroll additional youth in this substance abuse and gang prevention program. This program will help reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in Jersey City.

Gunshot Location System Acquisition

Vineland NJ Police Department
Vineland, NJ

The requested funds will be used to purchase equipment that will allow the Vineland Police Department to quickly identify the location of gunfire within the City. Network sensors will be able to detect and calculate the position where the gun was fired and send the data to a central server accessible by law-enforcement agencies. This will help to increase police response time, enhance criminal apprehension and provide a safer community.

The requested funds will be used to facilitate upgrades in local police public safety radio systems. Upgrades will include systems analysis and the purchase and installation of radio equipment to allow public safety personnel to communicate more effectively and reliably.

The University will purchase and install law enforcement technology and equipment and work with local police to create a new public safety program to help make the University a safer environment for students.

The requested funds will be used to expand World Impact's after-school and anti-gang program for at-risk youth. The program will provide more than 100 students with the opportunity and resources to develop life skills and strong character, work skills, respect for others, teamwork, and gang prevention techniques.

Delaware River Basin Enhanced Flood Warning System

Delaware River Basin Commission
West Trenton, NJ

The requested funds will be used for enhancements to the Delaware River Basin's flood warning system. This includes: a storm surge inundation and flooding forecast system; upgrades to the existing stream gage network; flood warning education and outreach and; support of flood coordination. These flood warning priorities were identified by the Delaware River Basin Interstate Flood Mitigation Task Force Action Agenda of 2007, which was commissioned at the request of the four basin governors. Effective flood warning is critical to minimize the loss of life and property during flood events and coordination of flood warning enhancements among federal, state and local agencies ensures the efficient use of available technical and financial resources.

Strategy to Reduce Impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources of the Delaware River Basin

The requested funds will be used to define strategies to prepare the Delaware Basin community for potential major changes to water resources due to climate change. This project will result in defined projects, programs and policy recommendations to reduce potential impacts and long-term costs.

Challenger Learning Center of Southern New Jersey

The requested funds will be used to establish a Challenger Learning Center (CLC) in Southern NJ that will include simulators and initial operating costs. The CLC will generate active student involvement in problem solving and team work that will also help to encourage students to consider careers as scientists, engineers, technicians and doctors.

Mid-Atlantic Regional Coastal Community and Ocean Ecosystem Initiative

The requested funds will enable the University to work directly with communities, the state and regional partners to develop the information and tools needed to develop and implement cost-effective coastal management strategies and policies to reduce pollution, restore and protect critical habitats that support resilient coastal ecosystems and communities, and reduce coastal flooding. The project supports key strategic policy and program priorities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as the Administration's Ocean Policy Task Force including: hazard resilience and sustainable coastal communities, coastal zone management, coastal habitat conservation and restoration, real time water quality monitoring and mapping to inform science-based coastal and ocean resource management and collaborative regional ecosystem-based management.

Summer Flounder and Black Sea Bass Initiative

The requested funds will be used to address the most urgent scientific issues limiting successful management of the summer flounder and black sea bass fisheries. PMAFS is a multi-state multi-institutional partnership that will utilize academic and recreational/commercial fisheries resources to provide for accurate and effective management of summer flounder and black sea bass in the Mid-Atlantic region. PMAFS will incorporate this critical information into the management process through well-established partnerships with the National Marine Fisheries Service, Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission assessment programs.
