AGRICULTURE REQUESTS
The following projects, listed in alphabetical order by requesting organization, will protect New Jersey's agricultural land and improve food production.
Conservation Technical Assistance
New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts
Trenton, NJ
The funding will be used statewide to help develop conservation plans on
farms and address suburban and urban neighbor concerns, assist municipal
and county planners with soil and other resource needs, help farms
improve water quality, and sustain operations by wise use of soil and
water resources.

New Jersey Cranberry/Blueberry Disease & Breeding
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
New Brunswick, NJ
New Jersey is the nation's second largest producer of high-bush
blueberries and the nation's third largest producer of cranberries. The
requested funding will be used to: develop new cranberry and blueberry
varieties which enhance economic sustainability; develop environmentally
sound insect and disease management technologies; identify health
attributes of these native crops, and investigate new and value-added
uses. Research on breeding and pest management will provide continued
support for the $50 million a year industry. Past research has found
bacterial anti-adherence mechanisms helping to fight certain infections,
and other antioxidant properties. Funds will be used primarily for
research associates, lab and field technicians and students.

New Jersey Urban-Suburban Extension
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
New Brunswick, NJ
The Urban-Suburban Extension Program will provide solutions to help
municipalities solve their environmental problems. This project will
fund a comprehensive needs assessment specifically regarding water
resources issues, restoration and urban ecology. This effort will help
to counter the negative impact on New Jersey's environment from intense
urban development, energy demands, and population density.
