Preparing For The Digital Television Transition

Consumers now have until Friday, June 12, 2009 to prepare for the digital transition, when TV broadcasters will switch from analog to digital signals. The transition will provide better programming, picture and sound quality, and free up space for wireless broadband and public safety needs. But some consumers must prepare now to receive digital signals.

After June 12, consumers with analog televisions that receive free over-the-air programming using an antenna (or “rabbit ears”) will no longer be able to receive programming unless they take steps to prepare for the digital transition.

To ensure that they continue to receive television programming, consumers can do one of three things:

  • Purchase a digital television; or
  • Subscribe to cable, satellite, or other pay TV service.
